Some of you have had questions about DMDM Hydantoin, a common ingredient used previously as a preservative in certain OGX® formulas to prevent mold from developing while the product is stored in the shower. While the ingredient does that job well, we haven’t launched any new haircare products with DMDM Hydantoin in the last several years, and we stopped producing any haircare products with DMDM Hydantoin as of September 2021.
We continuously evolve our formulations to create the best and most innovative products that give you the hair results you want. WHY ARE YOU MAKING THESE FORMULATION CHANGES NOW?
We’ve been working for years on achieving a more balanced pH in all our products to improve results for your hair. We haven’t launched any new products with DMDM Hydantoin in the last several years, so you may already be enjoying the benefits of these new formulas. But after listening to recent feedback from some of our consumers, we accelerated our plans to launch our new innovative formulations in our haircare products. This was successfully done in September 2021.
We put all of our formulations through a rigorous safety assessment process to ensure that our products are safe and improve hair results for our consumers. And, our commitment to you is that we’ll never stop evolving our products to improve results for you and your hair!
DOES DMDM HYDANTOIN CAUSE HAIR LOSS OR SCALP IRRITATION?
Your health is our top priority, and we want you to have a great experience with our products. We recognize that consumer health is extremely personal. As with any product, very small percentage of people may have a hypersensitive allergy to a specific ingredient, which is why we always include a list of ingredients used on our product label.

WHAT ARE YOU REPLACING DMDM WITH?
We’re replacing DMDM Hydantoin in our products with Sodium Benzoate, a preservative commonly used in food and that is naturally found in cinnamon. We have reformulated our products with a commonly used preservative often also used in food and naturally found in cinnamon.
WHEN WILL THE NEW FORMULATIONS BE AVAILABLE?
We haven’t launched any new haircare products with DMDM Hydantoin in the last several years, so you may already be enjoying the benefits of these evolved formulas. There are many factors that determine when they’ll reach your shelves, but we are working with our manufacturing partners to ensure they’re included in our entire collection of products for you.
